The Proper Order of the Chronicles of Narnia

Until this week, I had no idea there was controversy surrounding the order of the Chronicles of Narnia books. I discovered this by accident.

While learning about Lions, we picked up The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe book on CD from the Library. We enjoyed it enough, that we decided to get the next book. I thought the next book was Prince Caspian, but the CD box at the library told me it was volume four in the series. I trusted the box over my own memory, and so we went home with the CD that told me it was the first book in the series, The Magician’s Nephew.

At this point I was feeling very befuddled because I didn’t remember The Magician’s Nephew at all, and I would have put money on the fact that The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, was the first book. Everyone knows that, right? And yet the box told me otherwise. Maybe, I thought, it wasn’t the first, just the most famous or something like that.

Finally, I had to find a written order to get myself oriented again. This whole experience had left me feeling lost, and my understanding of my little world. I needed grounding again, so I turned to my trusty friend, Google.

And so it is that I learned that there are two schools of thought on the chronology of the Chronicles of Narnia. One puts them is order of publication – this is the order that my set of books (and my own memory) used. The other method puts them in chronological order of the story’s time line. This reminds me a little of FOX changing the order of the Firefly episodes – why change the way the creator chose to unfold the story?

While I personally really enjoyed The Magician’s Nephew , and highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t read it, I have to say I don’t think I would have liked reading it before The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Part of the appeal of it, is knowing what is to come in the future, and it is written in a way that assumes that the reader has that knowledge. I suppose it would be fine if they didn’t, but not quite as fun methinks. In the same vein, I think knowing the extensive backstory before The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe would have been just too much information, and taken away most of the mystery.

This isn’t the only change in order, but it’s just the one that has affected me personally thus far. Actually the only book the two numbering methods agree on is The Last Battle as the last book. I think I’ll go by the author’s ordering system and ignore the CD boxes from now on.

Out of curiosity, if you’ve read any of the Chronicles of Narnia, what order did you rad them in, and do you have an opinion on it?

Free to Good Home – Mini Soft Fabric Colors Book

While making some new Mini Soft Fabric Books for my Etsy Shop I made an “oops”. While trimming a thread, I accidentally cut into the blue page of an almost done mini colors book. While it wouldn’t have been impossible to take the book apart and replace the blue page with a new one, it would have been a lot more work and headache than to just make a new book from scratch. I decided I didn’t want to remake the whole book.
The same page also got a snag on the fabric somewhere alone the way that left a tiny pin point hole when trimmed up.
I did sew the approximately 1/4 inch cut closed by hand, but didn’t do anything to the snag hole – the needle would leave more holes than the original snag, so it seemed silly to stitch it. This photo points out the flaws:

The little fabric colors book isn’t up to my standards enough to sell in my shop. The rest of the book is in great shape, and I hope someone out there will be interested in having it, even if it has a little ‘oops’ factor. I’m offering it to the first person to request it. I’ll pay shipping – even international. I don’t recommend anyone leaving personal information, like an address, in the comments section here, so I ask that you send your request to me privately by clicking “contact this seller” in my Karabu Patchwork Creations Etsy Shop.
Hopefully this little book can find a loving home.
My kids (who normally get my ‘oops’ projects) already have a mini fabric colors book. I haven’t done a giveaway for awhile now, so I think my mistake was really a reminder that it’s time to have one!

Personalizing and Customizing

For many months in my Etsy shop, I had a note in my announcement section that I was happy to take custom orders. After one or two custom I spy blanket requests I realised that making custom orders involved a lot more work, and frequently involved buying additional supplies, like special fabric. The problem was that I felt uncomfortable asking for more money than my regular listings were priced at.

The solution I came up with was to create a special listing for a custom I-spy blanket that took into consideration the extra time and money I had to invest. Another problem, that I hadn’t thought about that creating this special listing created for me was that about the timing of payment.

Because I’m a wimp about asking for money, I’d usually spend all the time corresponding with my clients about their request, gathering sample fabrics, and even making the item before asking for payment. I’d create a listing for them when the item was done. Luckily, all my buyers are wonderful and honest people, but I’m sure there was the potential for me to be left with an item that was to personalized to resell.

Now, I’ll still work out the details of an order with someone, but once we’re ready to start actually cutting and sewing, I can ask for them to purchase the listing from my shop. Once payment clears, I start sewing. Even timid little me can handle asking that, and so far every single client has paid for their listing the same day I asked.

Soon after making the custom I spy blanket listing, I also made a listing for a custom Soft fabric book. I’ll be creating a custom soft jingle block listing soon too.

The very best things that creating special listing for my custom work has done for me is that I now get far more custom orders than I used to. I think people don’t always like to ask questions. Maybe they don’t want to take the time, maybe they are worried that the answer will be no, maybe they feel silly bothering someone else, I don’t know what all the reasons are. I just know that now that I have custom listings, I am almost always working on a custom order.

The listing makes it easy for buyers. It tells them they type of information I need to start. It lets them know what I’ll be doing for them and how long it will take me. It gives them all the information they need to decide to buy. It also gives them permission to ask for exactly what they want without feeling pushy or picky. Everyone wins!

I love Harry Potter, but. . .

Yep, I’m a Harry Potter fan. Love him. We, my husband and I, started reading the book, one chapter a night, during then last months of my first pregnancy. We read all the books this way, I think there were four at the time, and when a new book came out, we’d snuggle as a family in bed and read a chapter each night. It’s become a nice tradition for us.
When we were expecting our second baby, we decided to start the series over again (yes, we liked it that much) Now we just got our pre-ordered copy of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows”, but we’re only about halfway through book six. We aren’t ready for the new book just yet. I admit, I’m tempted to just whisk through the rest of six on my own so I can quickly read book seven to find out what happens. There’s so much hype and peer pressure to read it right away, it sounds like a fun thing to do, but we’re resisting the peer pressure. So even though we may not even start on the new, exciting book for over a week or so, we love our special family story time, and we’re keeping out tradition.
Just don’t dare try to talk to me about book seven for at least a month! I’m doing my darnedest to avoid spoilers.
I do love the Harry Potter books, but I love our special family time even more.

A new line

You know I love good quotes. Well, I made some quotation bookmarks for my paperandwords shop, but they were so simple, they look, well, just . . . bla. No fun. Then I got the idea to make them out of fabric. They are still simple (I’m a simple gal, what can I say) but I think the turned out really cool. I’m keeping one for myself.

They are cotton fabric (my favorite) with a stiff interfacing in them so they aren’t floppy.

The quotes I started with –

“I cannot live without books.” – Thomas Jefferson

“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.” – Groucho Marx
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. . .” – Albert Einstein

I have a few more in mind, but have to pick out neat fabric that goes well with the quotes.

I love it when I find ways to combine things that I love. In this case: books, and sewing.
