My Best Kid Party Idea To Date.

At my daughter’s last birthday (turning 2) we were going to end up having a lot more grown-up guests than kids. It was mainly family. So I wanted a fun activity for the adults. Since the kiddo’s favorite phrase at the time was “I do my own!” we had a DIY theme for the party.

I saw some darling dolls from GooseGrease on Etsy.

And I also noticed that they sold kits, and blank dolls that you can paint yourself. Now, my kiddo’s love the old wooden “Little People” dolls that my parents saved from when I was a kid. The have named each of the dolls for people in our family. I thought, How cool would it be to make them a set of dolls that really looked like our family?

So I bought a blank set of dolls, and had each person at the party paint themselves as a gift to the Birthday Girl. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, and the dolls are played with almost daily. It really made the day extra special, as cheesy as that sounds.

Easy to Make Baby Shoes that are Cute too!

I wanted to write this blog a long time ago, but I never got around to taking pictures of the shoes I made. Now that my daughter has outgrown them, I can’t find what I did with them. So still no pictures to share.

Ah well. I loved making them so much, and they were so nice to have, I’m going to blog about this free soft baby shoe pattern anyway.

The baby shoe pattern was created by Stardust Shoes, and they are both darling, and simple to sew. Even if you’re a beginning sewer, you can make these shoes.

Now I didn’t exactly follow the directions (I’m not normally a troublemaker, but I am lazy, and I don’t do things that I can get away with not doing). Also, I was not trying to make shoes that would last. I knew my daughter wouldn’t be wearing the shoes I made for very long, so I didn’t worry about cutting corners a little. While the shoes I made turned out very nice, and actually held up very well, if you plan to put them to serious use, or want them to last awhile, I recommend following the pattern’s directions more closely.

I didn’t use the bonded fleece for the sole; I just used canvas for the whole outside of one pair, and vinyl for another pair. I lined both pairs of baby shoes with flannel, and didn’t bother with any interfacing since both the fabrics I was using were fairly thick. I liked how the fleece made the insides soft and cozy. The vinyl pair of baby shoes was cute, but probably wouldn’t have been a good choice for a baby that was beginning to walk, as I think they may have been a little slick on the bottoms.

Soft baby shoes were much easier to make than I thought they would be. If you’ve ever been tempted to try it, download the free baby shoe pattern and give it a try. If you like the look of these dhows, but don’t want to make your own, I know several great EtsyKids sellers have some really adorable baby shoes in their Etsy Shops.

Etsy For Animals Round Robin Quilt Project

Etsy for Animals is working on another great fund raiser. Members (including yours truly) are sewing quilt squares that will be assembled into a finished quilt and auctioned off.

Etsy for animals is a group of Etsy sellers who are passionate about helping animals. We donate a percentage of our Etsy Sales to animal charities, and find lots of other ways to help animal organizations. There’s even a special Etsy for Animals Shop that sells items donated by artists and crafters, with the profits going to charity. The group was created by Michele (mvegan5), and the huge task of organizing the quilt round robin project is being tackled by Jonny of dogonwear.

Personalizing and Customizing

For many months in my Etsy shop, I had a note in my announcement section that I was happy to take custom orders. After one or two custom I spy blanket requests I realised that making custom orders involved a lot more work, and frequently involved buying additional supplies, like special fabric. The problem was that I felt uncomfortable asking for more money than my regular listings were priced at.

The solution I came up with was to create a special listing for a custom I-spy blanket that took into consideration the extra time and money I had to invest. Another problem, that I hadn’t thought about that creating this special listing created for me was that about the timing of payment.

Because I’m a wimp about asking for money, I’d usually spend all the time corresponding with my clients about their request, gathering sample fabrics, and even making the item before asking for payment. I’d create a listing for them when the item was done. Luckily, all my buyers are wonderful and honest people, but I’m sure there was the potential for me to be left with an item that was to personalized to resell.

Now, I’ll still work out the details of an order with someone, but once we’re ready to start actually cutting and sewing, I can ask for them to purchase the listing from my shop. Once payment clears, I start sewing. Even timid little me can handle asking that, and so far every single client has paid for their listing the same day I asked.

Soon after making the custom I spy blanket listing, I also made a listing for a custom Soft fabric book. I’ll be creating a custom soft jingle block listing soon too.

The very best things that creating special listing for my custom work has done for me is that I now get far more custom orders than I used to. I think people don’t always like to ask questions. Maybe they don’t want to take the time, maybe they are worried that the answer will be no, maybe they feel silly bothering someone else, I don’t know what all the reasons are. I just know that now that I have custom listings, I am almost always working on a custom order.

The listing makes it easy for buyers. It tells them they type of information I need to start. It lets them know what I’ll be doing for them and how long it will take me. It gives them all the information they need to decide to buy. It also gives them permission to ask for exactly what they want without feeling pushy or picky. Everyone wins!

My 15 Minutes

Parents Magazine (yes THE Parents magazine) did a little blurb on Etsy, and included my Soft Fabric Animal book.
Excuse me for a moment while I do a happy dance.

*dances*

Yep – I’m kinda excited.
The other items are cool too. I actually just bought some toys from Stumppondtoy for my kids. His shop has been on my favorite list for awhile now.

*thunderous applause*

Congratulations!

Chosen randomly from a hat (okay, it was really a bowl) by my daughter.

Thanks so much to everyone who entered for making this giveaway so fun. Whenever I get issue #2 put together (I know, I know, I’ve been talking about that for awhile now, but it’ll happen, I’ve got big plans that take awhile), I’ll do it again.

Hugs and High Fives to all entrants for being such cool people.

Greeting Cards

I’ve wanted to make greeting cards ever since I had the idea to start a second shop for my writing. Not the typical cards that you learn how to make in scrapbook stores and such. Although I like those cards, I’ve bought them on Etsy before, that isn’t what I wanted to do with my own shop. My shop was for my writing. I want my cards to say something; I want to write them myself.
I’m planning a line with some humor (those are my favorite kinds of cards), silly rhyming poetry (that’s the only poetry I write), and inspiring famous quotations. I made my first two cards (actually I made three because the first one sold already – Whoo Hoo!) today and posted them in my shop.

A new line

You know I love good quotes. Well, I made some quotation bookmarks for my paperandwords shop, but they were so simple, they look, well, just . . . bla. No fun. Then I got the idea to make them out of fabric. They are still simple (I’m a simple gal, what can I say) but I think the turned out really cool. I’m keeping one for myself.

They are cotton fabric (my favorite) with a stiff interfacing in them so they aren’t floppy.

The quotes I started with –

“I cannot live without books.” – Thomas Jefferson

“Outside of a dog, a book is man’s best friend. Inside of a dog it’s too dark to read.” – Groucho Marx
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. . .” – Albert Einstein

I have a few more in mind, but have to pick out neat fabric that goes well with the quotes.

I love it when I find ways to combine things that I love. In this case: books, and sewing.

Thank You (part one)

I was part of Etsy’s most recent baby shower. Sellers signed up to either donate to pregnant women and new moms, or they signed up as recipients. Since I sell baby items, and I have a new baby – I signed up for both ends. It’s been a blast. I want to show off all the cool gifts I’ve received so far:

First, from Keiki Boutique – http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=62359ser_id=62359, I got this really nice, and incredibly handy diaper and wipes pouch:

It’s one of those things that once you use it for awhile, you wonder how you ever got along without it!

Then I got all these beautiful crochet items from AprilAdriance – http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=82334 :

She told me that the shawl can also be use around her waist as a cover-up. I hadn’t thought of that – but it would be perfect! I also got a yellow headband with a flower, but I left it at Grandma’s house when we last visited there. Gotta get that back! Isn’t this too cute?

And from ficklefaerie, http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=108801, and made by mamaziel, http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5089760, I got these great burp cloths –

These have been used non-stop since I opened the package. So great!

I can’t thank these great sellers enough. Thank you thank you thank you!!

Book Review Continued

We covered the lesson on “Teachability” this week from the book “Talent is Never Enough” by John C. Maxwell.

Now this is one area I don’t feel like I need much help on. I love learning, and am almost always open to suggestion for improvement. The book warns that pride is an enemy of teachability, but I have little to no pride. I could probably stand to work more on pride than teachability actually. Basically being teachable is being open to growth, and no one should ever be done growing.

I though I was fairly comfortable on the computer until I opened my Etsy shop. Then I had to learn about online marketing, about blogs, and HTML, banners. . . well, all kinds of stuff I didn’t know or care about a year ago. And its been fun, because I love to learn. Finally I found a personality trait I have that should serve me well.

I have to share some quotes from the book that really gave me the giggles. Maxwell gives a list of quote that supposedly came from real employee evaluations. My goal is to never be one of these people. I’m just going to give a few of my favorites – there are a bunch:

“Works well when under constant supervision and when cornered like a rat.”

“When she opens her mouth, it seems that it is only to change feet.”

“He sets low personal standards and consistently fails to achieve them.”

“If you see two people talking and one looks bored, he’s the other one.”

And my personal favorite, “This young lady had delusions of adequacy.”
